Exterior Design
One of the things that makes exteriors so challenging is that there are so many aspects that must function together. Roof colour, landscaping, gutter colour, soffit and fascia, stone, cement, windows, and more are just a few examples. Even more difficult, there is no “rule of thumb” for any of this because every home is unique, and what works for one may not work for another.
Exterior Design Process
The Key To Exterior Design
Over the life of a project, there are numerous design decisions to be made. It’s also crucial to keep in mind that they’re all interconnected and intertwined. The exterior design influences the floor plan, and the floor plan influences the exterior design. We frequently find ourselves gazing at something on the outside (in the form of a 3D model or 2D elevations), then moving to the floor plan and back. Alternatively, check everything from the floor plan to the exterior and back to ensure it still works and looks good.
The key to external design is to keep in mind that it should be done in unison with the floor layout, not afterward.
It is an iterative design approach. It requires a lot of back-and-forth between design drawings, and it reacts to every design decision you make until you reach the final design.
There are several characteristics that make various design styles work.
Multiple rooflines, dormers, porches, and screened patios are common features of traditional houses with gable or hipped roofs, as are “ins and outs” in the footprint to provide that curb appeal interest. Those bump-outs must be taken into account while developing the floor plan. You can’t expect a rectangle layout to have the same charm and character as a classic roofline. A modern home with a flat roof or a succession of pitched roofs, on the other hand, may have an entirely different underlying organising scheme to help produce the look that flat roofs or scattered volumes provide.
